Preparing a Vehicle for Shipping

A practical guide from the vehicle shipping specialists at Gech Inc.

Preparing a Vehicle for Shipping

A little preparation before pickup makes the whole shipping process smoother โ€” and protects you in case anything goes wrong. Here's our complete pre-shipping checklist.

One Week Before Pickup

  • Wash the exterior. A clean car makes pre-existing damage easy to document at pickup.
  • Document the vehicle's condition. Take dated photos from all four sides, the roof, the wheels and any existing damage in close-up.
  • Service any active fluid leaks. Carriers may refuse leaking vehicles for safety.
  • Confirm the battery is charged. Drivers need to start the vehicle to load and unload.

Day Before Pickup

  • Remove all personal items. Insurance does not cover personal belongings in the vehicle. Some carriers allow up to 100 lbs in the trunk, but you assume the risk.
  • Remove toll transponders. Tags continue charging if left in the vehicle.
  • Remove aftermarket accessories. Detachable GPS units, dash cams, sound system faceplates and similar items should travel separately.
  • Reduce fuel to about 1/4 tank. Enough to load and unload, not so much it adds weight.
  • Disable alarms. Or provide the driver clear instructions to disable them.
  • Fold mirrors and retract antennas if applicable.
  • Lock the convertible top on any drop-top vehicle.

Day of Pickup

  • Be present (or have an authorized adult present) at the agreed time.
  • Have the title or registration handy if requested.
  • Provide a spare key to give the driver.
  • Walk around the vehicle with the driver and complete the bill of lading together.
  • Note every existing scratch, dent and wheel scuff on the BOL.
  • Keep your copy of the signed BOL.

For Inoperable Vehicles

If your vehicle doesn't run, doesn't steer or doesn't brake, tell us before booking. We'll dispatch a carrier with a winch and the right equipment for safe loading.
